At a glance
A medical-device distributor needed full traceability and accurate picking across 2,800 SKUs on twenty-plus product lines. Multi-level tote-handling AMRs now bring totes to 14 pick stations, with every receipt, putaway, pick, check and dispatch step tracked in the WMS and mirrored in a 3D digital twin.
About the plant
A medical-device distribution centre in Tianjin, China, about 7,000 m², serving twenty-plus product lines. Medical-device logistics requires end-to-end traceability and precise, on-time delivery.
The challenge
- Operators walked to find stock; picking accuracy and traceability depended on people.
- 25,000 tote locations and about 400 bulk-rack positions had to be managed as one inventory.
- Order volume peaks had to be absorbed without adding staff.
The solution
Multi-level tote-handling AMRs serve 25,000 standard tote locations; bulk items stay on about 400 rack positions. Fourteen pick stations run goods-to-person picking. The WMS covers storage, location and vehicle control, and a 3D digital-twin view shows live operations. The design allows the fleet and stations to be rebalanced for peak periods.
The result
The operation now uses goods-to-person picking with WMS-controlled tote movement and end-to-end order traceability.
